Cordons have been erected around the abandoned chalk pit at Shide this evening (Wednesday) amid unconfirmed reports of a body discovery. Police descended on the area off Burnt House Lane at around 16:30, with officers now maintaining a scene guard around the area to the south of Newport. Several cordons are in place, including an inner cordon on the steps leading down into the former quarry. Detectives from Newport CID have arrived at Shide and are working alongside uniformed colleagues.
It’s unclear at this early stage if the death is being treated as suspicious or unexplained. Burnt House Lane has been closed to all traffic, as has Pan Lane.
