TRAIN STATION CORDONED OFF AFTER SUSPICIOUS OBJECT FOUND

stjohnssuspiciousobject2UPDATED: St John’s train station in Ryde has been cordoned off this afternoon (Friday) following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Several Police units are currently in attendance at the scene off St John’s Road and have cordoned both the station and car park off, preventing members of the public accessing the area.

Island Echo understands a member of the public reported finding a suspicious object within the gents toilets of the station shortly before 13:05.

British Transport Police, responsible for Policing at rail stations throughout the country, are en-route to the Island.

stjohnssuspiciousobject4The station remains closed and trains are currently only serving Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade.

UPDATE @ 16:30 – Officers from British Transport Police arrived at the scene shortly after 16:00 and have now deemed the object to be safe. The object, roughly the size of a brick with wires, has been removed.

St John’s Station and car park have now reopened and investigations continue.
