Motorists can expect significant delays in and around Wootton this morning (Friday) as a result of the emergency closure of Lushington Hill – the main road connecting Ryde and Newport.
It is understood a burst water main is the reason for the road closure, which is in force from the junction with Park Road to the junction with Palmers Road.
Water is said to be gushing down the hill from a burst near to Lushington Garden Buildings. It occurred at some point overnight.
The traffic issues are compounded by the fact Brocks Copse Road is also closed for roadworks, with works also taking place on Station Road.
Light traffic is able to use Park Road as a diversion to Wootton Common Roundabout, but HGVs heading between Ryde and Newport, or to/from the East Cowes ferry, must divert via Fairlee Road and Staplers Road due to a weight limit on the Park Road bridge.
Southern Vectis says all of its Route 9 buses will be operating via Staplers until further notice.
UPDATE @ 11:00 – Island Roads has confirmed that the road is expected to remain closed until 18:00 today.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – Lushington Hill has now reopened and Southern Vectis routes 4 and 9 have resumed normal operations.
Up goes our Warter bills again, crap infrastructure and the consumer will have to pay for it….

Why couldn’t they just close one lane? Looks like they are using the other lane to park the van and digger. I suppose it saves them walking a few feet the poor loves.

Read an article about Newport works here on Island Echo and see comments on removing parking spaces – that “walking few feet” seems super important to some, apparently nobody will ever go to Newport again if they can’t park right at a shop entrance 😉

Ha ha. Button it Dave you creep. Used to be a time when efforts were made to keep roads open while work was conducted but not any more. Position the digger to the left and the lane on the right could be open. Park the van on the verge for the crew to have their usual nap after lunch. Or alternatively just work hard and get it fixed in an hour or two. These people won’t even lift a shovel any more.
Due to all the idiots on the island’s roads who can’t drive on a straight or curved piece of tarmac. Expect them to slow down and safely maneuver a hole in the road and avoid hitting any workmen…… that’s beyond their capabilities.
The way many car drivers drive over here, I wouldn’t want to be working in a hole with a live lane of traffic 4ft away. Would you? Probably end up dead with a car on top of you!
Fun fact: in the Netherlands sometimes bike lanes are used as diversion for cars during emergency works. There is still priority for any bikes but cars have a way to go through.
It’s pretty much the same as firefighters often using bike paths instead of roads because they are less clogged.
If we had proper quality biking paths (good width, proper concrete) along that route we could easily do a safe bypass.
But never mind, AFAIK many drivers don’t like bike paths here 😉

Even where a bike path is provided eg Fairlee Road/Racecourse, many cyclists seem reluctant to use it.
How correct you are, if cars were driven on pavements they would / should get done for it so why not a cyclist holding up 2 miles of traffic coming from Newport time after time when they poodle along on the main road towards race course and beyond .when there’s clearly a cycle path.

I cannot believe what I have just seen! There are no workers there at the moment and I’ve just several cars drive from Wootton towards Newport and then mount the kerb and grass to drive around the barriers! Disgraceful behaviour.
You shouldn’t be surprised. This is how they always operate. They are all in the van having a vape, eating sandwiches and laughing about how long they can get away with doing nothing. They will probably clock off at 3 pm and leave it until after the bank holiday weekend.

Clancy do all the work. Repair the main / Tarmac. A road with that kind of traffic needs 3 hours minimum for the tar to cool.
