UPDATED: Firefighters have this evening (Monday) tackled a fire at a sewage treatment works in Sandown.
Three appliances from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin fire stations were called to the Southern Water treatment plant on East Yar Road just before 19:00 following reports of a fire in one of the site’s outbuildings.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus have successfully tackled the single-storey blaze using a hose reel and left the scene less than 3 hours later. A dry powder fire extinguisher was also used.
The full extent of the damage sustained is currently unknown. Island Echo has approached Southern Water for a statement.
No one was injured in the incident.
UPDATE @ 10:05 – A spokesperson for Southern Water has told Island Echo:
“Firefighters were called to our Sandown Wastewater Treatment Works last night to deal with a small fire in an outbuilding.
“The site, which serves the majority of the island, continues to operate as normal and customers’ services are not affected.

“At the moment, the cause of the fire is unknown.”
