A shoplifter with a ‘horrendous’ criminal record has narrowly avoided being sent to prison.
John Duckworth, 51, of Green Street in Ryde, admitted a single charge of theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Friday 5th December).
Prosecuting, Serena Edwards, told the court that on the 7th September, at around 15:30, Duckworth and 2 others, including someone in a wheelchair, entered Morrisons in Newport.
The group then proceeded to head to the alcohol aisle and fill several bags up with bottles of alcohol.
As they went to leave the shop, the security barrier was activated and a security guard detained them. The goods were recovered.
The court heard how the 51-year-old was on bail at the time of the offending and has a record of 50 convictions for nearly 100 offences.
Defending Duckworth, Oscar Vincent, told the court that all the items were recovered and that his client has been out of trouble since the offence.
Magistrates said the offence had a degree of planning and that they have a duty to protect shopkeepers. Despite those remarks, Duckworth was handed a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12-months.
He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £154 surcharge fee.

What a joke Island justice is.
When are decent deterrents going to behanded out, I suspect a shoplifting spree was carried out right after leaving the court.
Hasn’t been in trouble since. I suspect he hasn’t been caught since.
And the Government thinks the world of them. Gives them even more money to scrounge with while crapping on pensioners and working people, and encouraging them to breed yet another deliberate brat to avoid ever working. Nothing but waste of space parasites taking the piss out of the system, with no one with any balls to question it
The Government are buying their votes.
No deterrent. This is a complete joke
He will never change. Honest people face increasing prices because of people like this.
Surely a spell in prison would at least cut the losses if Island shops.
Obviously had some bottle
or bottles
As Tesco would say, every little helps
Lol
I almost cant be bothered to post..but here we go ..PATHETIC as usual.
“Magistrates said the offence had a degree of planning and that they have a duty to protect shopkeepers”
But they haven’t done that.
Vermin thief.
