A serious crash involving at least 2 cars has forced the closure of Long Lane between Newport and Downend tonight (Sunday).
Police have closed the road in both directions between Robin Hill roundabout and Staplers Road having been alerted to the incident at around 18:00.
Island Echo understands 2 vehicles have been involved in the smash, which has occurred around half way between Buckbury Lane and Downend.
The Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has been called in to conduct a forensic examination of the crash scene, indicating the severity of the injuries sustained and that the road is to remain closed for several hours.
Both Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have also responded to the crash.
There have been no reports of any persons trapped and the assistance of the air ambulance has not been required.

Let’s hope the mainland unit can see why such
crashes happen.
As I keep saying something seriously needs to be
done about speeding on Island Roads,
they are no longer safe for motorists.
20 is plenty. Let’s hope IW Council take a leaf
out of the mainlands book and implement
strict speeding rules, even Bognor is implementing
20mph in certain areas.
Who said speed was the casue of this “accident”? I was there and it was down to careless driving.
Speed per se does not cause accidents so get real.
Speeding is the number one reason for, accidents.
Maybe you need to re-educate yourself.
I completely agree with you. The standard of driving on the island is appalling! It’s due to the poor behaviour of society as a whole. Very few drivers abide by the rules now because they believe they can ‘get away with it’. It has all started in schools where teachers ignore the small misdemeanors to avoid unpopularity amongst the kids. Now, I see many drivers illegally parking on double yellow lines – favourite is vans parked by crossing at Sainsbury’s – driver has probably just popped in to buy lunch! Only today, walking along Carisbrooke High Street at 8 am, it is 20mph due to the primary school, a woman was driving much faster than 20mph. I’m not at all surprised by the number of crashes we hear about. People only think about themselves now – a completely selfish society. Add in the drug drivers – a recipe for disaster.
Traffic law on the island is a joke, hence so
many motorists doing what they want.
IT’S 2024 AND IW COUNCIL STILL DON’T OWN
A TOWING COMPANY TO CLAMP AND TOW AWAY
B’STARDS WHO BREAK THE RULES
IW Council are more bothered booking drivers
who go a few minutes over their time.
I will never respect a lawless council
Why we pay them Council tax I don’t know!.
Useless ********
Who said anything about this accident being due to speeding??? It was down to careless driving. Speeding per se does not cause accidents.
Of course speeding causes accidents, get with it.
Wouldn’t mind betting the one doing the careless driving wasn’t the one with serious injuries, it never works out that way, and the involve some other poor sod.
