A serial shoplifter who stole from a Newport supermarket to feed her heroin addiction has been fined £240 by the courts.
Angie Holroyd, 44, of Westhill Drive in Shanklin, appeared before Magistrates this week charged with 2 counts of theft from a shop. She pleaded guilty to both charges.
The court heard that Holroyd entered Asda on 24th June this year and placed a selection of items into a bag before walking straight out the door – with no effort to pay.
Then, just 2 weeks later, she returned to the same store on St George’s Way and stole a number of items of stationery.
Holroyd was caught by a local Police Officer who recognised her on CCTV footage.
Magistrates heard that Holroyd had only recently been in court for stealing and for possession of heroin.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client’s story was a sad one as she had become addicted to methadone after being given some by a friend to help ease back pain. When the friend stopped supplying the methadone, Holroyd became addicted to heroin – eventually losing her house. However, Mr Osborne explained that the 44-year-old had been clean for 3 weeks and was now on a methadone prescription.
Mr Osborne said that her future now looks positive.
Magistrates fined Angie Holroyd £240 and ordered her to pay a £48 surcharge. She already owes the court £360.
Aaron Rookey, 43, of Barton Road in Newport, pleaded guilty to 2 counts of theft from a shop on the same dates – 24th June and 8th July.
Rooke appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where the bench heard similar details to that of the case of Holroyd.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, said that the incidents were separate but Rooke did meet up with Holroyd after the offences.
The 43-year-old stole £25 worth of wine from Asda, as well as a number of plants. He pleaded guilty to both thefts.
Magistrates fined Rooke £215 and ordered him to pay £25 compensation and a £48 surcharge.

Oh dear. It looks like she really fell on hard times. I’m sure she feels bad and will put this behind her. I hope she gets the help she needs.
Agreed I really do hope these two get the help they need!!!
Lol what a pair errrrr. Errrrrr errrrr errrr
lol? I don’t think There’s anything funny about addiction. There just good people gone down a bad route but it’s not to late to turn things around!
Omg these two use to live in Brighstone!
Why do people take this sh*t? I really don’t understand. A person’s life goes into a downward spiral once it gets a hold. What’s the attraction? Some people are just so stupid to get mixed up with drugs.
I agree some people are stupid but they have there reasons and it’s hard to stop once your on it.
