HM Coastguard are currently involved in the search for what is believed to be a person in the water.
UPDATE @ 18:45 – The search for what has now been confirmed as a person in the water has been stood down this evening.
Solent Coastguard received a radio message from a passing yacht at just gone 17:30 reporting the sighting of the wreckage of a speedboat off Gilkicker point, Gosport. Two people – an adult and a child – were quickly rescued from the water by another vessel, however a full scale search and rescue operation was launched to locate an unaccounted sailor, who has since been found safely on the shore at Gosport.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Newport were called to the Cowes waterfront alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, where the first two casualties have been receiving medical attention at Cowes RNLI station.
Hillhead Coastguard Rescue Team took position on the mainland shore.
The wreckage is now being towed to Gosport by the two independent lifeboats with the assistance of Hampshire Constabulary’s Marine Unit.
Craig Needham, UK Coastguard, said:
“Fortunately for the people involved there were vessels in the area that alerted us to the sinking speedboat. If we were not made aware there could have been a very different outcome.
“It really is important that if you own a boat you get a DSC VHF radio so that you can raise the alarm if the worst should happen. A Personal Locator Beacon is also a useful and simple method for raising an alert particularly if the electrics fail”
