Police have closed the main road connecting Ryde to Brading following a road traffic collision, in which a car has crashed head-on into a railway bridge.
It was just before 19:15 that emergency services were called to Rowborough Lane, as a result of a single vehicle collision.
A Saab seemingly failed to negotiate the bend and smashed into the wall of the railway bridge, which spans across Island Line on the outskirts of Brading.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has treated those involved, although their injuries are thought to be minor.
All traffic – including Southern Vectis Route 3 buses – is currently being diverted via St Helens and Bembridge in both directions.
Recovery of the car involved is underway with the road expected to reopen shortly.
UPDATE @ 20:54 – The incident has now been cleared and the road has reopened.
All buses are reverting to a normal route.

If there were strict speed limits enforced by speed cameras
such accidents would not happen.
To fail to negotiate with a bend sounds like speeding to
me.
It is not rocket science.
We have enough road works on the island as it is.
Dorset Council are implementing 20mph in
many locations.
Come on IW Council take a leaf out of Dorset Councils
book.
Road safety is imperative
We need forced mandatory re-tests for over 50s
Wait for it ……………
Come on, you know that road needs speed cameras and a 20 limit to deter numpty motorists!
He is still asleep!
You know it’s coming Dave enough is enough incoming
Enumpty is Enumpty is on his way
I would have speed humps installed both sides of this bridge
to MAKE vehicles go slow on this DANGEROUS bend.
Everytime I drive over this Bridge oncoming vehicles always
come over the white lines BECAUSE THEY ARE DRIVING TOO FAST!
20mph is plenty.
I cannot wait until the country crushes all vehicles and only
driverless vehicles are on the roads.
Driverless vehicles don’t speed, drink or drug drive.
BUT SELFISH INCONSIDERATE NUMPTIES DO
Still waiting Dave, When is it due?
More bad driving on the Iow
More shit driving drink drugs speed…not many left now.
Possibly the worst road to cross on the island is New Road in Brading. Just what is it that’s so important to get to in Seaview and St Helens that you have to run people over trying to cross?
Just arrived back on the island from the big smoke
20mph was plenty driving through the big smoke
much safer roads than the island.
Only bug bear was paying £18.00 congestion charge.
Living on the island is a plus for numpties
‘No speed cameras and No congestion charge’
People moan about the time it takes to drive to
Newport or Cowes due to road works.
In the big smoke even though you pay the
daily congestion charge of £18.00 it takes a long
time getting any where with the volume of traffic.
Stop moaning you have it easy.
IW COUNCIL might one day install speed cameras
to make island roads safe and they might charge a
congestion charge.
Big smoke? How quaint
In defense of the driver I have driven a Saab they are very hard to drive and too heavy to stop quickly I don’t think other motorists understand how much skill is involved to drive an old car as the new cars are so safe in a new car everyone chases and tailgates and bullies. Are there any gentleman left on the road bullying women to go faster taking out their stress and sexual frustration on women drivers .
Tons of motorists dont understand stopping distances one is intimidated on the road 9 times out of 10 the only good drivers have driven hard to operate cars from last century.
Thank you for reading
Sorry to add I am only assuming the car is a classic old car I am not 100 percent sure where this accident was but I am guessing the one just before the traffic lights to st helens. I think if I am right that’s a 40/50 possibly even 60mph road. The downs road for example is far more dangerous. I always think it’s as bad as being on a rollercoaster.
Yes I definitely think speed cameras a must. And probably reduce that bridge where the Saab crashed to 30 in preparation for the bend.
Probably best really now to make the whole island a one way system. So all the tailgaters can go in the fast lane. The only fun drivers have is chasing you up the arse to be blunt as there is almost nowhere at all to over take safely on any island road . Everyone needs a dash cam in the rear window here not the front. Sorry to go off subject of the Saab hope the passengers are ok.
In short the tailgaters who are 97 percent should learn how to drive safely with stopping distances learnt. It causes the chased motorists to crash obviously not in this incident re solo incident luckily.
Can all motorist just under stand if you bully the driver in front they get stressed and likely to crash and why should the lead driver go faster to please the idiot behind? Ok sorry off tangent but the island roads are incredibly dangerous if you don’t get the correct gear and speed for the bends new cars don’t understand how older cars handle slow brakes etc older cars and less expensive ones ought to be respected as an historical inheritance of how lovely it was before the island was trashed by property development and overcrowding.
Basically the system is be patient or walk. The roads are originally built for horse and carriage. Let’s respect the past and not make everything a huge rat race like London/ mainland people have come to the island to escape the rat race but in doing so have made it an unpleasant experience to live here now. Phones etc technology taken over very few people are concentrating on the corners they are worrying about phone calls getting to a job .
I would love to see a stress free life for everyone. Work or no work no one deserves this modern world rich or poor
Ok sorry for the rambling off the main issue of the unfortunate Saab driver /passengers
