RESIDENTS FOIL ATTEMPTED DUMPER TRUCK THEFT

UPDATED: Residents living on Bluebell Meadows in Newport have foiled an attempted dumper truck theft tonight (Thursday), but significant damage has been sustained to cars and gardens.

The incident began at around 22:00 when commotion was heard as the dumper – situated on a work site at the bottom of the Meadows – crashed through metal barriers.

Island Echo understands 1 local resident chased after the dumper and the suspect prior to the arrival of Police officers, who have been praised for their immediate response.

Unfortunately, damage has been caused to a number of parked cars and gardens on the estate as a result of the attempted theft.

A man has been arrested and detained in connection with the incident. He has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.

UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 19-year-old man remains in custody this morning as officers probe the events of last night.
