A children’s playground in East Cowes has been severely damaged by fire following a possible arson attack.
Fire crews from East Cowes, as well as the water carrier from Newport were called to the popular seaside play park on the Esplanade at around 00:15hrs this morning (Sunday).
Firefighters remained on the scene for 60 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
A large play apparatus has been destroyed, leaving the ground charred by the flames.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary are now investigating the incident, however the cause of the blaze is currently unclear.
Island Echo believes an ember may have set fire to the grass before spreading to the structure.
The incident has sparked fury among parents on the Isle of Wight Breaking News Group, where the story was broken this morning. One parent said: “I cant believe how selfish people can be. Now it means another thing the kids cant use the park”.
