PERSON ON ROOF AFTER LARGE POLICE RESPONSE

imageUPDATED: Police have tonight (Thursday) cordoned off a section of South Street in Newport as a woman threatens to jump from the multi-storey car park.

More than 7 Police units responded to Newport Bus Station just before 20:20, where it is understood a female has been arrested. Unconfirmed reports suggest a Police officer was bitten, resulting in an all unit response.

Witnesses have described to Island Echo how moments later a second woman ran across the road to the Co-Operative multi-storey car park and is now sat on the edge of the building screaming.

Motorists are being diverted through the bus station, however pedestrians are being kept away from the scene. Taxis parked in the rank outside TK Maxx have been asked to move on.

UPDATE @ 21:04 – Police have tonight successfully talked down the hysterical woman from the roof of the multi-storey car park.

One pumping appliance and one aerial appliance from nearby Newport Fire Station were called to the scene by Police to assist, however were not required.

The unknown female has been arrested by Police alongside one other female arrested in the bus station.

South Street has fully reopened in both directions.
