A pensioner who waved a knife at his neighbour outside her home in Cowes has pleaded guilty to 2 offences at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this week.
Kenneth Berry, 72, of Weston Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article (knife), and to using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
The court had previously heard the case on 6th September where Berry pleaded not guilty, however, this time around he indicated a guilty plea to both charges.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on 24th July, loud noises and banging were heard coming from Berry’s flat, as noticed by 1 of his neighbours.
Berry then went to the address of the neighbour on the floor above and knocked on her door. The neighbour opened the door and saw Berry standing there with a kitchen knife in his hand.
The 72-year-old proceeded to stand at the doorway engaging in a verbal exchange with his neighbour shouting at her that there were people in her house. Something the court heard wasn’t the case.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that her client accepts that he had a knife on the day of the incident. She also added that Berry was a man with a long list of medical issues and that he was struggling with his mental health too.
Berry was warned about the likelihood of him receiving a custodial sentence as a result of a charge for the exact same offence back in 2013.
The case was adjourned until 25th November to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled.

This care in the community lark has cost millions more than keeping Whitecroft asylum open.
As all need social workers, mental health teams all costing a fortune, AND then we have to pay for housing each, council tax for all of them along with huge medical bills.
Far better to house them in one huge asylum and have one doctor and mental health worker care for them in house.
Also would free up housing for the normal people and would not disrupt the lives of every town and village on the Island.
Bring back Asylums I say.
”Berry was a man with a long list of medical issues and that he was struggling with his mental health”. So why the bloody hell is he being allowed to walk among the public with a knife? He is a danger to the public and should be kept away from us. Whose incompetence is this down to? We need some names here of people to hold to account for putting innocent people at risk. Pomander is dead right. We’ve got Thatcher to thank for closing down the asylums and the borstals and this is the result we are now lumbered with.
She as been out of power for 32 years. They have had 32 years to bring asylums back, they haven’t. Why you may ask, they agree with there abolition.
