A pedestrian has been struck by a car on the dual carriageway in Newport tonight (Thursday), forcing the closure of the major road in both directions.
Police and paramedics are on scene at Medina Way, where a male casualty is being tended to after being involved in a collision with a car.
Island Echo understands the individual was crossing both the southbound and northbound carriageways of the 70mph road when the incident occurred at around 20:00.
A number of vehicles have stopped at the scene.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a rapid response paramedic, an ambulance crew and an operational commander in attendance.
Medina Way has been closed in both directions with all traffic being diverted via Riverway (southbound) and off at the Lidl slip (northbound).
Police have locked down both sides of the dual carriageway whilst initial investigations are carried out.
UPDATE @ 20:47 – The injured party has been conveyed the short distance to hospital by ambulance.
His injuries are not thought to be serious or life-threatening.
Police have now stood down their response to the collision, reopening both the northbound and southbound carriageways.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Police have confirmed that a 51-year-old man was taken to hospital, but enquiries have established that despite him having a head injury, no collision actually took place.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says it responded to a reported collision and were treating the situation as such, but new information suggests the man’s injuries were not caused by a vehicle, and no crime had been committed.
Well if we installed speed bumps and mandatory re-tests for the over 50s we wouldn’t have this problem.

You posted before all details were available, it turns out cars had nothing to do with this incident as it looks as if he wasn’t hit by any vehicle.

Tanks dual carriageway is too short to be worthy of
70mph. Speed humps on this Road would solve a
thing, speed Camera’s would be more effective.
