Paramedics are tending to a cyclist who has been injured on a busy main thoroughfare in Ryde this morning (Monday), resulting in the closure of the road.
Emergency services are currently in attendance on East Hill Road, where a male has come off his bicycle and is laid in the carriageway.
Island Echo understands a vehicle edging out of a driveway led to the incident, although no contact is thought to have occurred between the car and bicycle.
The incident happened at just before 08:45, shortly after the morning school run for nearby St Mary’s and Oakfield primary schools.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has an ambulance and rapid response paramedic on scene.
Police are also in attendance and have closed East Hill Road in both directions.
Traffic is being turned away from the area with motorists utilising West Hill Road as an alternative route.
UPDATE @ 12:55 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the cyclist has sustained serious injuries.
He has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
East Hill Road has reopened.
