Bembridge RNLI were tasked to launch at 01:22 this morning (Sunday) at the request of Solent Coastguard to assist a 20m boat (converted to a tall ship) approximately 5 miles SSW of St Catherine’s Point that had reported that she was taking on water.
The call for help was made by the 5 crew on board using a mobile phone as the vessel’s VHF had stopped working.
The Frank and Anne Wilkinson relief all weather lifeboat reached the ‘Revenge’ at 02:18 and two lifeboat crew members were transferred to her assess the situation. They confirmed that the water was coming from the stern gland but was being contained by the pumps.
Having ascertained from the skipper that he and his crew wished to continue their passage from Bristol to Brighton – and having left a hand held VHF radio on board – the lifeboat and her crew headed back to Bembridge and rehoused by 04:15.
Overnight the Island’s fire service were called out to at least two shouts with crews from Newport, Ryde, East Cowes and Sandown all turning out.
