POLL: George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has this week said he will explore options for a fixed link to the Isle of Wight, but only if Islanders want it.
As previously reported by Island Echo, several millions of pounds is available through the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership for major transport schemes in the South, with even more money on its way in the future.
The article, which was seen by over 50,000 people on Island Echo’s Facebook alone, has got Islanders talking about the future and the possibility of a bridge or tunnel between the mainland and the Isle of Wight.
Local residents Carl Feeney and Kevin Price are continuing to gather thoughts on the fixed link idea and are helping to disprove common misconceptions via the Isle of Wight Fixed Link Referendum Group on Facebook, which has grown by nearly 3000 members since Island Echo’s article went live a week ago.
The fixed link debate has split public opinion, with many saying it would ruin the Island’s unique feel, whilst others say it would revolutionise the Island and would help increase tourism and overall growth.
