The Government has confirmed that hairdressers will not be allowed to re-open until JULY at the earliest, meaning the Isle of Wight could soon be thrown back to the 80s (if it ever left!) with the return of whacky hairstyles like The Mullet.
As announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson last night, a route map to unlocking the country has been divided which breaks things down into a 3-phase plan. Although many will be able to go back to work from this week and unlimited exercise will be permitted from Wednesday, there are a number of other elements to normal life that won’t be making a return anytime soon.
Foreign Sectary Dominic Raab has this morning (Monday) confirmed that hairdressers will be included in Phase 3 of the Government’s plan, which means barbers and salons will not re-open until at least 4th July – but it could be much longer. The same timeline is in place for pubs and restaurants.
The next step in the route map is the phased re-opening of non-essential shops and the re-introduction of primary school pupils to schools from 1st June at the earliest, starting with Years R, 1 and 6. Secondary school students will likely not be back in school before the summer break.
Mr Raab said this “modest” change to the lockdown would include builders and those who work in manufacturing, with a full list of who is being asked to go back to work this week to be published later today.

NO, what it means in reality is many of those hairdressers getting ‘paid by the state’, claiming council tax relief and mortgage or rent breaks, are also working cash in hand at their home, or the home of clients.
I know this for fact, not fiction.
If you doubt such check out most of the populations hair, not many unkempt, nor will there be.
Many are working on the sly.
Anyone having Turkey this Christmas? Such is ‘still’ popular.
Many other cash in hand workers such as gardeners, window cleaners, decorators etc are also getting ‘double bubble’ and as paying no tax, are far better off than ever.
Yes before the moan goes up, I know those employed by firms are not and we do have those that aren’t, but we do have a lot that are taking full advantage.
This gardener is still working, not claiming anything. Please don’t assume that’s what everyone is doing.
Well said. Me too I’m still working and not claiming anything.
I am a mobile hairdresser and not working since lockdown have just started taking appointments for July
Whilst this might be the case for a SMALL number of individuals, you are being somewhat presumptive and very generalistic in your accusation. Very much a ‘scattergun’ approach!
My hair was starting to look as if a bird was thinking of nesting in it, but my partner has a set of hair clippers (for personal use, they are not a hairdresser), so I have had my hair cut at home by my partner.
I never said ALL.
Sure, I have had my hair cut with the pets clippers. My other half asked ” What about the germs and the fleas” when I suggested using them. I said ” That’s alright, the dog is used to them”
I know many have worked through this without claiming, but many are on the ‘make’ to me made worse as many cash in hand people such as barbers, gardeners etc, OFTEN, not always but OFTEN don’t declare tips, or some cash payments so avoid paying their fair share of tax, yet then are ready to claim these handouts.
I know Turkey is a good destination, also for Hols.
You should see my tax bills then you’ll maybe shut up slandering us good people.
I’ve not had a holiday abroad for 19 years!!!!!
You’ve got no idea & extremely rude.
Has someone ripped you off? Just trying to figure out your comments tbh…
PET my partner is a hairdresser and hasn’t touched her scissors since the lockdown started she also hasn’t received 1 payments as yet from the government yet we are still paying our mortgage and other bills as not entitled to anything as i also work so shut your mouth
Clearly those who ARE honest are replying. Like if i were to say lots are swindling the council tax by pretending to live alone.
Those who ARE are unlikely to come on saying ‘Yes, you are right’, as to do so is NOT in ‘their’ interests.
Not saying everyone is, but people are quick to take advantage or are the courts full of honest but wrongly convicted now?
I’m a hairdresser and am not cutting people’s hair on the sly…If you look closely you will see people who have had their hair cut have been from their own home. With patches missing, unblended bits of hair and random tufts unless they are lucky enough to have someone around who has a knack for cutting hair!
Iv not been to any hairdressers for 30 years now and not i dont have a grade 1 my wife cuts it for me and iv never had any patches. Well yes i have but that was the last time i used a hairdresser
I have seen some funny cuts over the last fee week tho ha
We all ways say make do and mend it wont be for much longer
Where have you got this idea from. Self employed hairdressers cannot even put in a claim for any help until this Wednesday at the earliest
How do I know this. I am a registered Tax Agent and have 5 claims in front of me from the small amount of Self Employed people I do books for. As for being well off when they do get any money? most of them will get very little and they have already been without anything since 21st March. If you are going to make “nasty assumptions” at least try and get your facts right first.
So glad you’ve posted this as this is very accurate I’ve been self employed for 12 years as a hairdresser work hard long hours and pay all my taxes and haven’t had a penny since the 23rd of March did apply yesterday for government scheme got what was worked out over three years tax returns and will return to work in July hopefully .. my husband has kept out house going for the past few months no handouts or council tax reduction either very sad how some people judge others
Rude….. The majority of us hairdressers (Barbers) are not doing it on the sly thank you very much, this time off has been hell!
If you are caught doing it you will be fined & unable to trade again…. & If they are claiming then they’ll have to pay that back.
Yes a few people are doing this but there’s also a few people doing lots of wrong things…..
Most people actually care about their customers & their own personal safety & are following the rules.
I’ve never been so skint in my life, still struggling to pay off things because claiming doesn’t cover everything, I’ve earnt my own money for over 20 years & I hate this situation we are all in but we don’t have a choice.
Gardeners & Window Cleaners are still able to work & have been allowed throughout all of this so why bring them into this? those who are claiming are entitled to do so as I’m sure many clients have cancelled on them… They still have their homes & bills to pay for….
Maybe a supportive comment to those struggling instead of making out many of us are fiddling things when we’re not!
Makes me question you & why you’re so negative tbh?
There were clues in my posts re certain hair dressers. Placed in a random fashion so as not to incur additional wrath. Never realised that I lived on such an honest Isle, Cyprus is divided between Greeks and Turkish. I wonder IF one group of peoples is more honest than the other?
Last post, as can’t spell it out any more.
I am a self employed hairdresser who is sheilding, I am definitely not working until I’m told I’m allowed to & that it is safe to do so. I’m definitely not taking the Mickey!!!!!!
That’s a bit unfair! I’m a mobile hairdresser NOT WORKING, skint because I cannot get any money yet as my partner has over a certain amount of money!
I am an independent person who has tried to always pay my way by working full time for over 30years but now I’m having to wait till hopefully this wk8wks in, I might get some help!
Please don’t put us all in the same boat, as I am really starting to struggle now along with several other hairdressers I know
Please don’t put all hairdressers in this bracket
I for one AM Not doing ANY of the things
You’ve said their doing .
It’s a tough time , please don’t say things
Like this , it’s not nice
My neighbour is a barber and he’s been off work longer than i have. He is not cutting my hair . My wife has. Results to be shown later
Pet can you honestly tell us hand on Hart you have declared every penny you have ever earned
Munch, perhaps not, and I certainly wouldn’t if I could get away with such now. Doesn’t make that right though.
The best gamekeeper is made from an ex poacher.
Seems very wrong to take from those you have defrauded though to me now.
Guess morals have slipped even more now
