PICTURES: The Island has been left to clear up a trail of destruction this morning (Friday) following a strong and isolated storm that passed over the Island late last night.
Residents were awoken to claps of thunder and flashes of lightning as the freak storm battered the Island with such force that the roof of a block of flats in Sandown was blown off.
Emergency services including the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Avenue Road at around 00:45 after debris was spread across the carriageway when roofing from a nearby property became dislodged. Just half a mile down the road, a tree and lamp post fell near the junction with Perowne Way.
The East Wight appears to have suffered the brunt of the electrical storm, which also brought down a large tree on the main Sandown to Newport road near to The Fighting Cocks pub in Arreton.
Smaller trees in the area also suffered the same fate, including on Victoria Avenue in Sandown.
In Newport, households experienced intermittent power supplies into the early hours with a complete loss of electricity for some properties following a fault with a local substation.
Island Echo readers have been sharing their videos and photographs of the visual display that lit up the night sky as if it was daylight.
Here is a selection of the best…
