A 36-year-old woman has been handed an 18-month driving ban after being caught driving whilst twice the drink-drive limit earlier this month (May).
Hayley Delemere, of Scarrots Lane in Newport, pleaded guilty to 1 count of driving under the influence when she appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
The court heard that Delemere was driving behind a Police car on Blackwater Road shortly after midnight on 17th May, with officers noticing that she was driving quickly and swerving behind them.
Police pulled over and let the 36-year-old pass witnessing her continuing to swerve all over the road in her electric Hyundai Kona.
Upon being pulled over, Delemere refused a roadside breath test – she claims due to an ongoing legal dispute with the constable. She was taken to the Police station where she then blew a reading of 71 milligrams.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick said his client had consumed some alcohol earlier in the day but then fell asleep. He added that upon waking up Delemere felt fine to drive and began a journey to collect belongings from her brother’s house, believing her blood alcohol levels had reduced.
Mr McGoldrick said that Hayley Delemere was unemployed, receiving universal credit, and was due to be starting a new job at a call centre in Cowes.
She was handed an 18-month driving ban and ordered to pay a fine of £120, as well as £85 costs and a £34 surcharge.
