An Isle of Wight teaching assistant is preparing to take on a solo half-marathon challenge to raise money for the Island’s mental health team, and for St George’s School.

Despite his plans for the challenge to take place in February being forced to change by the coronavirus lockdown, 30-year-old Jamie Hinson has continued his training and will now complete the challenge on 18th April.

Jamie left St George’s at 18-years-old and became the first former pupil to leave and gain full-time employment as a teaching assistant at the school.

His run will see him depart Newport via Pan, heading to Wootton via Whiterails Road, before circling to Whippingham and heading back along with riverside footpath to Newport Quay. He’ll then run through Carisbrooke and Gunville before returning back to his start point.

Speaking about his reasons for the challenge, Jamie said:

“Some of you may be aware but mental health, special education, and social care is my absolute passion and has been for the last 15 years.

“During this pandemic it has been a real struggle for so many people including the vulnerable. I am always up for supporting and donating to fantastic charities. I will be donating the funds to a special needs school on the Isle of Wight St George’s School and the Isle of Wight Mental Health team.

“Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much support for children and adults with mental health during this pandemic. I know a lot of people are facing other challenges but I am kindly asking for any small donations that can be spared or use to sponsor me for this event.”

With an initial goal of raising £500, Jamie is still seeking donations towards his cause. You can donate on his JustGiving page.
