The new toilets at St Johns Road in Sandown have now been officially opened, after a short delay.
In a first for the Island, the pay-per-use toilets will accept many forms of contactless payment methods including contactless cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, as well as coins.
Offering a disabled-accessible unit as well as a unisex cubicle, they are similar to the ones recently installed at Shanklin that have been well received.
Well lit, ventilated and heated during the colder months, they will provide Sandown’s residents and visitors with high-quality public toilets that will stand the test of time and contribute to making Sandown a better place.
Completed on budget at just under £78,000 pounds, it marks the start of significant investment in Sandown’s public toilets with the re-provision of Eastern Gardens toilets planned to take place over this winter.
Sandown Mayor Paddy Lightfoot said:
“I am delighted to see these toilets completed, after the initial plans were laid pre-Covid. However, this is just the start of modernising Council managed toilets, with future planned significant investment into Eastern Gardens and Yaverland sites.
“The Council has worked toward providing modern, useable facilities that maximise availability whilst minimising running cost.

christ almighty have to pay to piss like we dont pay enough to these muppets…
Does the additional needs toilet open using a Radar key?
I would like to know that to please
Can charge your electric car for free, but have to pay to use a toilet.
That’s taking the piss!
Where do you charge your cars for free then ?
About time they started to charge for the staff toilets in County Hall.
No mention of how much, but it looks like the days of ‘spending a penny’ are long past especially if you need a credit/debit etc card to afford it?
Typical tight bard stuard Council yet again.
Next thing will be a breathing tax!
More people will ge finding alternative places to go!
I don’t mind paying to pee if they were cleaned between uses but they are usually dirty to add insult to the fact you have just paid.
