Island Roads is reminding residents that work to improve busy Great Preston Road in Ryde is due to get underway this week – but things won’t begin today as originally planned.
The 6-week project will upgrade 3 sections of Great Preston Road between Carlton Road and Alexandra Road – a total area of around 1,200 square metres.
To reduce the need for future work, the project will involve strengthening the road itself as well as resurfacing it. This means deeper excavation and, as a result, Great Preston Road will be closed as a through road for the duration of the project.
The work is being timed to avoid the Spring and Summer months when the road is busier and also after a period of recent activity in the area by utility companies as well as Island Roads’ own improvement work.
Given the need to minimise disruption in the main holiday season, Island Roads is also in the coming months undertaking a programme of other local road improvements all of which have been – or will be – advertised in the communities affected.
The works were meant to get underway today (Monday) but Island Roads made the decision to postpone them by a few days to allow other works that have been conducted by Southern Water to finish before they move in.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“It is clearly sensible, where possible, to reduce planned roadworks in the high summer season when the roads are at their busiest but this of course means we have to schedule work at other times of the year.
“While we make every effort to minimise disruption work of this nature will inevitably have some impact and we’d like to thank residents in advance for their understanding.”

Let’s hope the Yellow Lines, get put in place at the same time.
That road is so Dangerous, with cars parked on the paverment and Grass verge.
My mate has to take his Mobility Scooter, on to the road to get past the Vans and Cars.
He has Lived there 45Yrs, and never known it so bad until this lot of Law breakers moved in.
Not dangerous unless you are a crap driver.
Let us hope that the yellow lines are placed outside the S.A women who thinks she owns the road outside her rented, housing acc. ex council house.
Has caused much trouble for decent, working families just earning a living whilst she does nothing but add more clones to the woe of the next generation.
The problem seems to be a yellow Vauxhall Corsa
who thinks they can Park on Pavements.
Seems to be outside the Council Houses
no 90 to my knowledge.
The Authorities if there are any on the Island need to get off their
Ar*as and do something about it!
Because when an Accident takes place they are too blame.
IOW Council have a duty of care, the Council don’t seem to give a
Fu*k what goes on!
BAN PAVEMENT PARKING
What about the Caulkheads along the Road who park a
Vauxhall Corsa permanently on the pavement.
Not half as bad as some one from S.A
I’d love to own one of those towing trucks; remove that bright orange flatbed parked half on the pavement on the corner of Preston Close.
And remove the yellow Vauxhall Corsa that’s
Parked outside the Council Houses along Great Preston Rd.
Sadly there is NO law and order on the Island when it comes to parking.
The Council let “idiots” park where they want.
There is always a yellow car parked on the pavement outside the Council Houses
Along Great Preston Road – it brings the Road to a standstill, vehicles cannot pass
without stopping.
Large buses use this Road.
Wheelchairs and peaks cannot walk along Pavements.
IW Council are too blame! STOP “IDIOTS” PARKING ON PAVEMENTS
PLACE THOSE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES F.F.S
Usual culprits Number 90 Great Preston Rd
Parks car on the pavement 24/7
Who can respect an incompetent Council who let 1 family
Yes 1 Family bring a Road to a stand still!
Number 90 Great Preston Road needs Double Red Lines, NOT
Double Yellow lines placed outside their House.
Think of others, don’t be selfish ba*tards!
DON’T PARK ON THE PAVEMENT.
If you want double red lines, move back to London
Zero Health and Safety on the Island.
NO ONE AT COUNTY HALL KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
They are too busy planning their next Holiday whilst working from home,
being paid an extorninate salary.
Parking my car there now to add to your little “problem”
Thanks for reminding me
Will never happen due to an incompetent Council and an
Incompetent MP.
Safety is not a concern on the Island.
The Island does not give a f**k about Safety for pedestrians and other motorists.
Maybe one day they will have to use a Mobility Scooter themselves and then they will realise the Dangers of cars being parked on pavements.
I do not respect IW Council. I do not respect idiots.
They are employed to make Roads and Pavements safe for everyone.
Do these planned “improvements” include the disgusting bottom end of George street where the tarmac has scabbed off the underlying concrete?
Why is only three “sections” of the road being done when the entire road needs doing? Will end up with half a job like they did with Fairlee Road, some areas better but some areas still terrible.
Most desperate place calling out for Double Yellow lines is
outside the Council Houses along Great Preston Road on the bend,
DUE TO VEHICLES BEING LEFT ON THE PAVEMENT
VEHICLES HAVE TO COME TO A COMPLETE “”STOP””
It’s 2023 how can a couple of families be “ALLOWED”to bring an whole Road to a
standstill!
Where are Highways / IW Council
WHAT DO WE PAY COUNCIL TAX FOR!.
I just wish drivers would comply with the designated speed limits whilst using the “designated alternative” routes.
When will Tenants / Home owners finally realise they do not own the
Pavement outside the Home they live in!
If someone needs more spaces.
No.1 get rid of extra vehicles.
No.2 park some where else.
No.3 Move to a property with extra Parking.
DON’T PARK ON PAVEMENTS
Drove along this road yesterday and it is completely worn out.Typical toads why not do the whole road while you have the equipment there.Another Fairlea effort me thinks fix a bit leave a bit quick fix.Can anyone say the roads are in better condition now than before ISLAND TOADS took over.
They’re actually going to repair roads rather than pavements?!!
These are not improvements, they are repairs. Also not the 1st time the road has needed repairs. How Island roads continues to operate is amazing. Totally incompetent.
its not what they no its who they know, family members in the council
LET THE TOADS SEE THE ROADS.More bodge jobs and quick fixes will be along soon.
So yet another bodge job on its way from Island Rouges. If, yes if, the job was done properly it would involve the ENTIRE LENGTH of Great Preston Road, end to end. And with sufficient labour, actually working that is, to get the job done in minimum time. But no hope there, this is the Isle of Wait (at the lights).
The Island is run by Idiots, hence nothing ever gets done.
DOUBLE YELLOW LINES WILL NEVER HAPPEN ALONG GREAT PRESTON ROAD
because IW Council do not care about Road Safety!
I doubt they even know where Great Preston Road is!
Talking of Island Toads
To work for Island Toads you need to be qualified in the following:-
1 Be able to sit on your ar*e all day.
2 Be able to put feet up in truck.
3 Be able to eat all day.
4 Be able to be permanently on the mobile texting.
5 Be a Watcher, while 1 person works, 6 or 7 other persons watch.
SUCH A WASTE OF TAX PAYERS MONEY
Bring back Mountjoy, Crown Park and Dempsey’s

I understand the moaning motorists in previous comments, as I observe their behaviour. Half of them are selfish, self-entitled, impatient and irresponsible.
It’s a residential road, ruined by unstable drivers, fools with thunderous exhausts, and the occasional mini-motorbike maniac.
You want double yellow lines so you don’t have to go slow or stop? It sounds awful for you, in your machine of irrational anger.
This alleged yellow Corsa probably parks on that bend to slow the nutters down, though I do agree that vehicles shouldn’t park on pavements, more irresponsible behaviour from the mighty motorist.
I hope that our corrupt government introduces a motoring meritocracy, to remove half of these unworthy ghouls.
