A trio of vehicles have become stranded in floodwater several foot deep on the outskirts of Ryde tonight (Sunday), prompting firefighters to be called into action to rescue the motorists involved.
Significant downpours over the past few hours have led to flash flooding across the Isle of Wight, with more than 35mm of rainfall recorded so far.
It’s at Pondwell Hill, between Appley and Nettlestone, that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been assisting stranded motorists, with 2 vans and a car stuck in fast-flowing flood water.
Island Echo is told by one of the drivers involved that they came around the corner and simply couldn’t see the flood, before driving straight into the depths.
2 fire appliances and a rescue tender have been involved in the incident. The road remains impassable.
Elsewhere on the Island, motorists are reported to have become stranded – but not in need of rescuing – at Briddlesford Road near Downend, and at Coach Lane in Brading.
As previously reported by Island Echo, 3 flood warnings are in place for Monktonmead in Ryde, as well as Carisbrooke & Hunnyhill on the Lukely Brook and Blackwater on the River Medina in Newport.
The worst of the weather has now passed, with the flood risk set to diminish between 23:00-01:00.
The situation on the roads is an improving one but large puddles remain.
Sorry to say it, but only a Numpty would drive in such conditions,
why go out if you don’t have too!.
I can understand Emergency services because that’s their job.
Stay at home or walk to the local pub, but driving, you need a
boat in these conditions.
Stop making judgments- you don’t know why these people were out and I think the term flash flood says it all.
If there was no indication that it was flooded as you rounded the bend then you get stuck…as the report said one driver didn’t see it and it looks like another was trying to take evasive action to pass. Not everyone knows the road and if it’s prone to flooding!!!!

I know maybe 30 plus years ago, there was a lorry used to go drive round sucking out the road side drains and storing in a tanker.
I have not seen anything like that for years. The odd island road gutter sucker crawling along, with a ludicrous, very bright flashing yellow light, blinding. Add dark and rain it becomes dangerous.
I digress, no doubt there are worthy reasons thats not done anymore. Sucked up those lizards, found a clown etc.
Clean drains do work better. And how fairlee road floods so much, with a lower tidal river within eye short
