More details have emerged about plans for a brand new McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant in Lake – but it won’t be open 24 hours a day.
A full planning application has now been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council for the creation of a new McDonald’s on Newport Road, directly next to Morrisons and opposite Aldi.
It comes just days after Island Echo revealed that Lake was to get a new drive-thru, accompanying the existing KFC drive-thru at Merrie Gardens.
The site – wedged between a residential house and the Merrie Gardens Pub – is currently a brownfield plot occupied by South Wight Rentals, a car sales business and a car wash.
Unlike McDonald’s in Ryde, the proposed restaurant will not open 24 hours, with hours of operation limited to 07:00-23:00. An acoustic fence and other noise mitigation measures form part of the application to protect local amenity.
The 309sqm restaurant will feature a drive-thru, parking for 37 cars and 50 indoor covers.
McDonald’s says the new site represents a multi-million-pound investment, bringing more than 120 full and part-time jobs to the local area.
According to figures in the application, McDonald’s already contributes approximately £3.74 million annually to the Isle of Wight economy, with 248 jobs supported across the restaurant and supply chain as of 2017.
The proposed building will be constructed using sustainable, modular techniques, with solar panels, recycled materials, and no on-site fossil fuel use. McDonald’s also plans to install customer recycling stations and conduct daily litter patrols around the site.
A decision on the application, 25/00587/FUL, is expected in late June. If approved, this will be the 3rd McDonald’s on the Isle of Wight.
It is anticipated that the new restaurant will take just 14 weeks to build, so it could be open by November this year.
It is already known that McDonald’s will be opening a drive-thru at the new St George’s Retail Park in Newport, thought to be opening in Q2 2026.
Today’s news comes days after Burger King was given the green light to open its second Isle of Wight outlet in the form of a drive-thru at Tesco Extra in Ryde.

Council in Ramsgate Kent have rejected plans
for a McDonald’s drive-thru due to housing allocation
and childrens health.
Shame IW Council don’t care about childrens Health.
