A serial shoplifter who stole over £220 from Newport supermarkets has been given a community order.
Aaron Rooke, 43 of Barton Road in Newport pleaded guilty to 3x theft from a shop and failing to surrender when he appeared in front of Magistrates.
The court heard that on no fewer than 3 occasions, Rooke entered shops in Newport and stole numerous goods of varying value.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, said that on 12th August, Rooke and an accomplice entered Morrisons in Newport placing bottles of alcohol totalling £58 into a bag and leaving without paying. A day later, from Sainsbury’s in Newport he and the same accomplice stole £200 worth of homeware, namely duvet covers and kitchen knives, from the shop without paying for them.
Finally, on 31st August – a day after Rooke had appeared in Court for a similar offence – he stole £226 pounds from The Entertainer toy shop in Newport. Goods were recovered whilst Rooke was arrested after he left the premises.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client has been battling drugs for almost 10 years, and up until recently when he was offered accommodation from those at The Salvation Army, was living in a tent.
Aaron Rooke was handed a 9-month community order and ordered to pay £29 in compensation to Morrisons in Newport and £200 in compensation to Sainsbury’s.
