A Cowes man who used to work as a mental health support worker has admitted punching a police officer in the face and will be sentenced next month.
Martin D’Arcy, 53, of Arctic Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Friday.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that at 03:00 on 24th February Police received reports from staff at St Mary’s Hospital that D’Arcy had absconded from the premises and had stated that he wanted to kill the ambulance crew before taking his own life by jumping into the River Medina.
A search of the surrounding area was conducted, with a drunk D’Arcy found on the nearby Parkhurst Road.
When he was approached by Police the 53-year-old refused to get in the Police van saying that he was ‘autistically strong’ before punching the female officer who was trying to restrain him in the face.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that D’Arcy, who used to work as a mental health practitioner, was now suffering from various problems of his own including depression, anxiety and bi-polar. She added that he regularly attended alcoholics anonymous and that he was trying to address his obvious drinking issues.
The case has been adjourned until 14th April. A pre-sentence report is to be compiled by that time.

still no excuse for asulting an officer especially a female officer when she was only doing her job
Especially a female officer?? Careful what you say equal rights and all that
Yes, especially a female officer.
I do hope he gets the help he needs? Working in mental health is no easy job.
Working as a female police officer is no easy job
Tuff all part of the job don’t like don’t do it all just go on strike
I Do hope this thing, get’s locked up for a long time.
There is no excuse for hitting a female, drunk, nut’s or what ever.
And if Amy Hosell thinks it is ok, then she needs to join him in a secure cell.
Regularly attended alcoholics anonymous? Ask for dates. It’s probably only a couple of times since his solicitor told him to, and will stop immediately after his sentence.
To be honest there is no excuse for hitting a male or female,…
No matter who they are !!!
Violence is never the answer or solution….
Hope it gets a long sentence, no one goes to work 2 be thumped …. or abused by oiks….
