A Newport man who kicked a hole through a door when he was ‘absolutely wasted’ has been ordered to pay £7.48 in compensation by the courts.
23-year-old Jackson White, of Lugley Street, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday 17th January charged with criminal damage, a charge he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity.
The court heard that White awoke neighbours on 24th July last year when he returned home to a block of flats intoxicated, with neighbours discovering in the morning that a hole had been made through wood covering up an already-damaged front door.
In the days that followed, White wrote a letter of apology in respect of his behaviour and the damage caused as a result. This ultimately led to Police conducting a voluntary interview in November last year.
Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, stated to the bench that White has no previous convictions but was handed a conditional discharge in 2020 for battery.
The Crown initially sought compensation of £233 but this was reduced to £7.48 for 20 screws and a section of OSB. The labour charge was discounted as the landlord’s own company had quoted for the work, which was deemed excessive.
Defending, Nick Muir said his client was full of remorse for his actions, which were partially down to severe ADHD mixed with drinking. Mr Muir told the court that White is no longer drinking and has re-engaged with mental health services
Magistrates handed Jackson White a 6-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £7.48 compensation.
