UPDATED: Two men have been rescued from under Ryde Pier this afternoon (Sunday) by two independent lifeboats.
Ryde Inshore Rescue and mainland counterparts Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service were alerted just before 14:00 to reports of two fisherman in difficulty off the Ryde coastline.
In bitterly cold conditions, the unidentified males were rescued by the volunteer lifeboat crewman and taken to the safety of Ryde Harbour, where the rescue teams were met by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The pair had been fishing in the Solent before their engine failed, sending them towards Ryde Pier. With the tide at it’s highest, the boat was slammed against the pier structure leading to cuts and bruises for the two casualties.
The two men have been assessed by the ambulance crew at the harbourmaster’s office.
Ryde Rescue 1 was recovered onto its tractor unit using the harbour’s slipway and taken by road base to station at Appley.
*It was initially understood just one person was involved, however it has been confirmed that a second fisherman was involved in the incident.
