UPDATED: Police have descended on Sandown in the search for a wanted man, who is understood to have attacked another man with a hammer earlier this morning (Monday).
At just before 10:55, at least 5 Police units responded to the Perowne Way area following reports of an assault near to the Sandown Train Station subway.
Island Echo understands that the wanted man, who had a dog with him, assaulted an individual by ‘hitting him on the head with a hammer’ before then attempting to smash a car as it reversed off a driveway. The silver car – a Vauxhall – has been left with a smashed windscreen.
Officers on the ground are now searching for the man, who is said to have had a scarf wrapped around his head as a balaclava. He made off in the direction of Los Altos park.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the assault to come forward.
It has been confirmed that a man tried to intervene upon seeing the assault. The witnesses’ Vauxhall Corsa suffered a smashed windscreen as a result.
The 27-year-old victim of the assault received minor injuries.
The wanted suspect is described as white and around 30 years old.
Police Staff Investigator Laura Taylor, from Newport CID, said:
“We are looking for anyone who saw this incident, possibly from a passing vehicle, to come forward.
