A man accused of lifting his German Shepherd dog up by its neck pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal when he appeared before Magistrates in Newport this morning (Tuesday).
36-year-old Elliott Hegarty, of Fitzroy Street in Sandown, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal on 18th March 2022.
Hegarty has also been charged with wilful obstruction of the highway – namely Fitzroy Street – and using threatening/abusive/insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
The court was made very aware that Elliott Hegarty’s dog is currently in the care of authorities.
Hegarty pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and elected for a Crown Court trial.
The case has been adjourned for a plea and trial preparation hearing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 12th September. He has been granted unconditional bail until that time.
UPDATE MAY 2023 – Mr Hegarty was cleared of any wrongdoing in respect of the causing unnecessary suffering to an animal charge at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 9th May.
Well hope they use FinnsLaw2 on him & gets sent down.
Let’s hope he gets strung up !!!

At long last you finally comment on something that is WORTH your time instead of calling me a bitch because I was attacked by my own beloved dog in a freak accident through absolutely No fault of my own!! His dog will be in an artificial concrete prison probably at the RSPCA where they are only allowed 30 mins of exercise a day… whilst the ABUSER walks free and probably only gets a fine. Where is the JUSTICE in THAT??? and that poor dog will be there for MONTHS on END.

What is wrong with some people? Animals aren’t toys! I feel more for my furbabies than I do humans, they don’t judge, they just need love. You don’t want animals don’t have them. Stories like this make me so ANGRY
This person has elected trial by Crown Court. If found guilty he will be subject to much hasher penalties than if he’d elected for his case to be heard at the Magistrates Court.
The only reason anyone would want a Crown Court trial is if they think a jury would be favourable to them. So maybe this isn’t as cut-and dried as everyone else seems to think.

Wouldn’t make a difference if he was band as there is a couple in Bembridge that left their dog In a car while they visited the prison and the poor thing died and now have another dog. Even though they was barred from having animals.
I held my dog back to stop him running up to some woman’s kid and jumping on him, and he jumped up and started barking like he always does when i hold him back. Not that i have to answer to any of you clueless COVID infested sheep.
This woman has spouted complete sh and said i was taking his legs out , kicking and punching my dog and yanking him about. I was wearing steel capped rigger boots that day, Im not an angel and i was angry that day but my dog kuro is my life and i have been through complete hell over this. 7 years of my dogs life from a puppy and he is a beautiful healthy fit czech shepherd with no ailments of abuse whatsoever…
If anyone would like some pictures of my beautiful dog throughout his life from a puppy i have hundreds i would be glad to share. On his own and with my nieces and nephew and other dogs. He lives in a 13 acre woodland in prime habitat and he is classed as a keystone species for the forest. I also have a beautiful czech wolfdog x german shepherd bitch as a companion for kuro , if anyone is interested for a possible future litter please get in touch. These are very unique dogs with excellent temperaments and can also withstand these insane temperatures we are all facing as well as 40 below, as their natural environment will show.
