A man who broke into Newport Conservative Club and was found on the roof avoiding ‘travellers’ who were chasing him – and accusing him of killing someone by drink driving – has pleaded guilty to criminal damage.
Mark Fyfe, 46, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to 1 count of criminal damage when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at around 03:00 on 16th May, Police were alerted after an alarm had been activated at Newport Conservative Club on Pyle Street.
Officers at the scene couldn’t see any signs of a break-in until they were notified by the control room that Fyfe had called Police to say that he had broken in as he was being chased. Fyfe was located on the roof of the property a short while after.
Defending himself, Fyfe said that he didn’t think about the incident at the time as he was being chased by 2 people. He stated that the people following him had been doing for so for a couple of months as they believed he was at fault for the death of someone they knew.
The 46-year-old was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £793 in compensation.

Why are this filth here on the island? We seem to have many types like this now. No wonder the crime has increased.
This comment will be widely regarded as racist and I would urge you to amend or delete it.
The travelling community are not a race, they merely adopt a certain lifestyle. I would urge you to amend or delete it.
Another fairy tale from the usual rubbish on our streets.
Should have run a bit further and got to the police station, its only 400 metres away….
Cameras should of caught all this as evidence too. I commend the guy for actually calling the police and telling them what had happened and what he did, if this is what really happened!
Ffs of course it isnt
