UPDATED: Emergency services are this morning (Tuesday) responding to reports of an overturned lorry near Blackgang that is understood to have resulted in one person becoming trapped.
Firefighters from Newport and Ventnor are working alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police at the scene on Blythe Shute, which runs between Blackgang and Chale. They were called to the scene at 07:47.
It is understood the incident has involved just the one vehicle, which has overturned into a field lining the carriageway. The driver is said to be trapped inside the cab of the lorry with back injuries.
Fire crews are working to extricate the driver, with the Rescue Tender from Newport Fire Station in attendance alongside two pumping appliances.
The road between Niton and Chale (Blackgang Road into Blythe Shute) is closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 08:25 – Southern Vectis Route 6 buses are affected by the closure and will divert from Chale Green via Appleford Road, Newport Road and into Niton in both directions until further notice.
Vectis Blue School Routes 316, 329 and 405 will be delayed as they have re-routed away from the incident.
UPDATE @ 08:57 – The driver of the flatbed lorry, a male aged in his 30s, has been successfully freed from the vehicle by firefighters and is now with paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
He has escaped any serious injury after his Mitshubishi lorry left the carriageway and overturned into a field around 15 metres from the edge of the road on a downhill section.
No other persons have been injured in the incident.
UPDATE @ 09:50 – A hard road closure has been put in place by Island Roads at the request of Police to allow for the recovery of the lorry.
Blythe Shute is likely to remain closed for the remainder of this morning.
