A long-serving prisoner at HMP Isle of Wight has appeared in court accused of starting a fire in his cell.
Sean Moore, 32, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday charged with arson.
The court heard that prison officers rushed to the segregation wing after alarms started actuating on 2nd October last year. They found smoke billowing from Sean Moore’s cell and a water hose was turned on to extinguish the flames.
Moore was then pulled from the smoke-filled room as firefighters responded to the incident.
Prosecutor Liz Miller told Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court that the value of the damage was £63.96.
She said:
“The firefighting went on for some time before fire crews arrived at the prison”.
Moore – appearing via video link – pleaded not guilty to a single count of arson.
Barry Arnett, defending, said his client claims to have no recollection of the fire and nobody witnessed it igniting.
He told the bench that the defendant is serving an Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence and has been incarcerated for more than 15 years, entering the prison sentence at just 16-years-old. It’s unknown what he was convicted of.
IPP sentences were available to courts between 2005 and 2012. According to the UK Government, they were designed to detain offenders who posed a significant risk of causing serious harm to the public through further serious offences in prison until they no longer posed such a risk.
When the legal adviser suggested that Moore stands trial on 8th June, he joked: “I’m free on the 8th” and numerous members of the courtroom laughed with him.
He will next appear at Isle of Wight Crown Court on 8th June. The trial is set last less than half a day.

should of just left him in there
Prison?….. Maybe a mental health facility would be more appropriate
Isn’t it, or shouldn’t it be, that once a person is no longer a child, that the crimes they’re incarcerated for be a matter of public record?
You must have a really messed up life to keep posting these comments.
Maybe you should look into getting some help with your own mental health.
Locked up for over 15 years since he was a child.
He would get less for murder.
I’m actually surprised you haven’t suggested putting Stella gabion filled with rocks in front of the door rather than mixing up the keys, apparently they are cheap also.
You really are a hater?
In a time long ago, he wouldn’t have had anything to burn whilst in ‘segregation’.
‘’Give them an inch..’’

you only got those if you were deemed a high risk to the public or a serious sex offender – wonder which he is.
Probably sold weed. Scum of the earth, youngsters these days.
I know him. It was nothing bad like that.
