Voters across the Isle of Wight will head to the polls in May after the Government confirmed that elections will take place as scheduled.
Elections for Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council, Portsmouth City Council, and the Isle of Wight Council, among others, will go ahead, following formal confirmation issued by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government today (Thursday).
The announcement, made by Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, brings an end to speculation that planned local government reorganisation could lead to a delay in the vote.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Reed described the changes as a landmark moment for local authorities.
He said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation reform that will transform local government for the better.
“Cutting through two-tier bureaucracy means faster decisions on housing, simpler access to services, and more money going to potholes, tackling crime and caring for older people instead of being lost to duplication.
“That’s what residents want, and that’s what reorganisation will achieve.”
Mr Reed added that the decision followed careful consideration of concerns raised during the consultation process.
“I have carefully considered arguments about capacity, reorganisation and democracy. “I’m grateful to everyone who took the time to express their views.”

Excellent news good to know this council aren’t as corrupt as the government
The Island could have been another “twice in a four year term” cancellation of Magna Carta, as has been the case with another 29 cancellations published today.
Out of those 29, 19 were Labour (or Labour minority), 5 were Conservative and 4 were NoC.
Par for the course for the two flip-flop parties – vote for me – no vote for me, or you’l get NO vote at all.
Strangely, 1 was Lib Dem run, who have been bleating about “democracy”, but failed to uphold that in Cheltenham. No surprise there then!
The Magna Carta thesedays seems to have been forgotten about
by the so called elites.
Possibly because it had little to do with politics itself, and more to do with pragmatism.
Magna Carta had nothing to do say about election law. And it never applied to peasants, only nobles.
Indeed, the first law relating to modern local elections as we know them was the 1888 Local Government Act, which led to the first county Council elections in 1889. That act allowed for council elections every 3 years.
The four year rule wasnt in place until the 20th century.
Good my vote reform anything better than this shower of shit.

That be reform then
I doubt it very much, they are clueless.
God they love using these ‘Once in a ???’ quotes to make it sound like they mean something when all that’s happening is they’ve had to back down and let the people have what they tried to stop the people from having in the first place, a chance to say ‘Piss off, we’ve had enough’
Great, democracy returns to the island. Another low turnout expected, along with another shaky alliance. I can hardly wait.
