Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat launched at the request of Solent Coastguard at 16:30 this afternoon (Wednesday) following a report of a windsurfer possibly in trouble north of Bembridge Harbour.
The D-class lifeboat was quickly on scene but after a thorough search could not find any sign of a windsurfer in difficulty.
After discussing the original report with the Coastguard, it was concluded that what someone had thought might have been a windsurfer was probably the remains of the 23ft sailing boat that was wrecked to the west of No 3 Channel buoy last week.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team conducted a shoreline search between St Helens Duver and Priory Bay, but also found no signs of any persons having been in difficulty.
The lifeboat returned to Lane End and was recovered by 17:30.
Anyone with information about the windsurfer – or the windsurfer themselves – should contact the National Maritime Operations Centre on 02392 552100.
