Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat was scrambled to the aid of a woman who suffered serious head injuries after being knocked unconscious by a yacht’s boom, while two other sailors were thrown overboard on Saturday.
Working alongside Coastguard Rescue 104 helicopter, Yarmouth RNLI were tasked to rough seas off of Hurst Castle shortly before 14:25 when a 40-year-old woman was hit by the boom on board the yacht ‘Marta’ and two other crew members fell overboard into the icy waters of The Solent.
The remaining crew on board Marta recovered one sailor, however one remained in the water for around 15 minutes and was starting to suffer the effects of hypothermia before rescue teams arrived.
A winch medivac was carried out for the seriously injured woman by the Coastguard helicopter, who took her to Southampton General Hospital.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service attended Yarmouth Harbour to assess the injuries of the two sailors who fell overboard, who are said to have been shocked but not seriously injured. They were both taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further check-ups.
Later that day, the yacht Marta may waves back to Lymington unaided.
