The 88-year-old driver of a Lexus, which ploughed into an elderly pedestrian before balancing over the sea wall in Shanklin, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. John Mather, of Kings Langley in Hertfordshire, is to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court tomorrow (Tuesday) facing 1 charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. It follows an incident on the Esplanade in Shanklin on 18th November 2022. Emergency services were called to the seaside spot at around lunchtime when a car mounted the pavement, smashed into a bench and caused leg injuries to a woman in her 70s. The Lexus SUV then came to a rest in a precarious position hanging over the sea wall. Now, following 18 months of investigation by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the Crown Prosecution Service has green-lighted a criminal charge against the Hertfordshire driver, who was 86 at the time of the crash. Mr Mather will appear before Magistrates tomorrow afternoon.
