The new illuminations in Lake ‘High Street’ were switched on for the first time on Thursday evening (19th August).
The lamp post-mounted lights have been provided by Lake Parish Council to attract business back as shops and restaurants recover from the pandemic.
Parish Council Chairman Paul Brading said:
“We hope the decorative lights will provide an attractive backdrop and encourage business in Sandown Road. They are the result of an idea by my deputy, Cllr Adrian Whittaker, and arranged by my predecessor Susan Horton”.
The lights cost £3,650 and were positioned and fixed by Island Roads in accordance with relevant safety standards.

Nice lights…
But the fact that you can’t actually see a shop in the high street photo above, tells its own story I’m afraid.
It is a nice idea but a bit underwhelming
I do however applaud the idea and am conscious of budget restraints.
Let’s hope it can be added to as money becomes available. It is nice for visitors.
no doubt the lights cost £50, the rest of the cost was Island Roads rip off fees
I think they should have saved the money judging by the look of them. Underwhelming springs to mind. And i’m not sure who thought that a disparate bunch of bulbs un-artfully arranged on a small number of street lamps would in any way “attract business back”
So, please correctly me if i’m wrong.
Lights that i assume come on when its dark and most shops will be closed. So are they saying we want to attract people to closed shops?
Surely, for the same money, something to attract people during opening hours would be more appropriate.
Most of the “shops” in Lake are actually take-aways so they will do business after dark regardless of what the lights look like!
Free parking would be better
Free parking is available behind Lake high street in the council car park. Press button for 1 hour free parking.
If you wanted evidence that councillors are completely out of touch with reality here you have it. God knows what they will come up with for Christmas probably free Easter Eggs.
Say no more our village will be overwhelmed with people (not)!
Complete waste of money!
All shops (what there are left) will be open every evening to waste money!
You can’t polish a turd!
high street – not a chance – more like a housing area.
Sorry , waste of good money.
A few dirty takeaways in a chav filled tardy characterless area as Lake is, will need more than a few tacky lights to lift its out of the mire it is deeply entrenched within. An awful blight on East Wight just a traffic filled, benefit town.
I am not a chat and I am proud to live in Lake. None of my neighbours are chavs. There are other shops apart from the popular takeaway restaurants.
Money would have been spent supporting the local businesses and community. What a shameful waste of money…
