A Bembridge man has been handed an interim driving disqualification after failing to provide an evidential specimen, despite indicating positive for multiple drugs at the roadside.
Craig Carey, 35, of Crossway in Bembridge, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at 12:00 on 16th August Carey was driving along West Street in Newport when he was stopped by Police, who decided they wanted to speak to him.
During the conversation with the officers, they became concerned about Carey’s demeanour and asked him to complete a roadside drugs wipe.
After the test came back positive for cannabis and cocaine, Carey was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station. It was there that the 35-year-old refused to provide a specimen of blood for analysis without a reasonable excuse to do so.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that Carey was fully cooperative with Police until he was asked to provide a blood sample. He said that the 35-year-old is in receipt of PIP (personal independence payment) for a disability affecting his spine.
The case was adjourned to consider the sentencing options. Carey was bailed unconditionally to appear at the same court on 7th October. He was given an interim driving disqualification in the meantime.

He can’t be that bad if he can get in and drive a car surely? PIP, just another benefit scroungers, a parasite who has no work ethic whatsoever and expects to be kept by working tax payers. Enjoy your cannabis and cocaine! Says it all really.
I’m sure his drug use was to combat pain. Looks like he could do with some help.
Serial offender. Seems every other week he gets nicked. Bembridge doesn’t need people like him.
Plenty more of these offenders in Bembridge, the village seem to think driving rules especially surrounding drink and drugs does not apply to them!
