Firefighters are tackling a house fire that has broken out on a residential street in central Cowes this afternoon (Tuesday).
Appliances are already on scene – with more on the way – at Moorgreen Road, where smoke is billowing from a family home.
Smoke can be seen issuing from the upper floors of the property, to the front and rear.
It was just before 17:30 that sirens began echoing through the town as Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident.
Fire crews are working to contain and extinguish the fire, the cause of which is unknown at this time.
UPDATE @ 18:57 – Island Echo understands the occupants have escaped the property, which has sustained significant fire and smoke damage.
Moorgreen Road has been closed in both directions with cordons in place.
UPDATE @ 20:40 – It has been confirmed that the fire began in one of the bedrooms – and is thought to have been accidental.
In total, 3 fire appliances from Cowes and Newport, plus an Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport, have been involved in fighting the blaze.
The fire is now out and the incident is being scaled back, although damping down continues.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have checked over 1 person.
