policearresteastcowesyouths3UPDATED: Four youths have been arrested by Police in East Cowes this afternoon (Friday) after a local homeless man was assaulted in the town.

Multiple Police units responded to reports of an attack against the older gentleman just before 14:45, as first reported by Island Echo. Officers moved in on four male suspects in the Castle Street area following the alleged assault in nearby Well Road.

policearresteastcowesyouths2It has been revealed that brave members of the public assisted Police in detaining the four youths, as photographed by Island Echo reader Mick Chester.

The homeless gentleman is understood to have suffered minor injuries and it is believed the suspects tried to take the victim’s possessions.

Hampshire Constabulary are investigating the incident. Anyone with information can contact Police by phoning 101. Information can also be given anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

UPDATE MONDAY: A 17-year-old boy has been charged in relation to Friday’s assault.

The unnamed male will appear in front of the Isle of Wight Youth Court within the next two weeks, however another 17-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 22-year-old have all been released without charge.
