A tourist who told his then-girlfriend that she deserved to be raped, before forcibly holding her down, has admitted 2 charges at court.
48-year-old Glen Conn, from Elmer Road in Bognor Regis, was holidaying on the Isle of Wight with his girlfriend in February of this year when their relationship came to an abrupt end – a holiday that landed him in the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The court heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that Conn and his partner returned to their hotel – the Melbourne Ardenlea in Shanklin – on 12th February after being out drinking. Conn had consumed some 9 pints and 2 shots.
Things were fine until Conn turned to his partner and said “you always mug me off and treat me like a c***”. To cool the situation down, Conn’s girlfriend – who Island Echo has decided not to name – went for a shower. When she returned to the bedroom and got into bed, Conn became affectionate but she simply wasn’t in the mood, Magistrates heard.
Conn, a builder by trade, started saying that it was because she was sleeping with someone else. He then put his forehead to hers and began a torrent of abuse saying she was a disgusting slut and deserved to be ‘raped up the arse’.
Conn forcibly held his girlfriend down and continued to be abusive.
As she tried to leave, 48-year-old Glen pulled her back into the room but eventually she was able to make her way to the public lobby. However, the abuse didn’t stop there and Conn kicked her bag, resulting in shampoo exploding inside. For this a charge of criminal damage was brought against Conn as well as the single charge of assault by beating.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client had total gaps in his memory but accepts what the victim has said. Mr Arnett told the court that Conn was on anti-depressants at the time which should not have been mixed with alcohol.
Magistrates adjourned the case to Worthing Magistrates Court on 30th May with a pre-sentence report requested.
