A section of the High Street in Ryde has been cordoned off by Police this afternoon (Wednesday) amid a medical incident, in which an elderly individual is being tended to in the middle of the road. Police and paramedics are on scene near the laundrette at the junction of the upper High Street and St Johns Road. Island Echo understands an elderly individual suffered a medical episode shortly before 14:30 and was initially assisted by passing members of the public. No road traffic collision has taken place. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are now tending to the patient, supported by members of the public and Police. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has closed the one-way street at both ends with cordons now in place.
Children leaving nearby Ryde Academy – and other pedestrians – are being diverted away from the scene via Prince Street and/or West Street. Traffic is heavy in the area so motorists should allow extra time for local journeys.
