An Isle of Wight man has been given a community order after admitting the theft of a bag of meat from a supermarket in Newport.
Benjamin Alexander Thomas Charles, 30, of Avenue Road in Sandown, admitted theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 6th February this year Charles entered Lidl supermarket in Newport and proceeded towards the meat aisle. He whipped out a Sports Direct bag and proceeded to steal £120.71 worth of meat products before walking out of the store.
A shop worker spotted the theft taking place and gave chase, grabbing Benjamin Charles outside the store. 30-year-old Charles threatened to hit the Lidl worker before then pulling down his mask and saying he had COVID.
The steak was recovered.
Magistrates handed down a 9-month community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement to the self-confessed heroin addict. This was partially in relation to a charge of possession of a Class A drug and assaulting an emergency worker, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Drugs are the route of all evil. Get off the smack, get your life together, get a job and pay for food just like the rest of us.
Well we all have struggles in life, I hate all the do gooders that say “it isn’t their fault” would you be so caring if they stole from you, broke into your house or mugged you to they can get smacked up or get a bottle of bucky… don’t think so. I’ve had a hard life. But doesn’t mean I’m going to hit the hardcore. We are all in control of our lives.
Read my post properly again…… you obviously didn’t first time round. I am not defending this chap in the slightest. Far from it!!!
Well done to the lidl worker for being so brave to give chase well done… hope lidl reward this member of staff
Like just given the bag of germy meat.
That’s twice he took from coop in Shanklin
Always do gooders giving excuses for these people and yeah I get people can have a hard life, but there are people out there myself included that have had struggles, been at rock bottom but I have never once touched drugs and robbed anything, there is no excuse, just people that do not care who they affect with there actions.
