PARAGLIDER CRASHES NEAR CHALE

blackgangcliffrescue_DSC_4239UPDATED: Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a aviation crash near Chale this lunchtime, resulting in one person receiving serious injuries.

It is understood the female pilot of a hang glider has crashed into the cliff face near to Blackgang, approximately 80m down, suffering suspected spinal injuries.

The incident happened shortly after 12:30

chalecliffrescueCoastguard Rescue teams from The Needles, Newport and Ventnor are on the scene and are currently performing a cliff rescue to reach the injured woman, who is said to live locally.

A Doctor and Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also on the scene, near to Blythe Shute.

Coastguard 104 is assisting in the incident and has lowered a spinal board down to the rescue teams.

UPDATE: The unnamed woman has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital this afternoon, touching down at 15:10.

UPDATE: Island Echo’s original reports suggested the woman was originally using a hang glider, but this has since been confirmed to be a paraglider.
