A hair salon business serving around 4 to 5 clients per day could operate out of a garden shed in the Isle of Wight’s county town.
Ellie Byerley of By Ells has applied to County Hall for a change of use of a cabin in her rear garden at 21 Albany Road, Hunnyhill.
The salon is proposed to open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00 to 10:00 until 18:00, Thursday from 10:00 until 20:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 until 16:00, but Ms Byerley has said these times are liable to change.
Her application form says:
“The cabin will be used as a small salon where I would work with one client at a time and have approx. 4/5 clients per working day. We have a driveway where the clients will park.
“The property is very close to a main bus route for non drivers.
“The dimensions of the new structure will remain exactly the same as the existing.
“I am currently self-employed. By bringing my business home enables me to have more flexibility with when I can work.
“It will also allow me to provide a much more personal/tailored experience for my customers.”
A public consultation on application 26/00179/FUL is live until 7th April and a decision is due on 28th April.

I do hope the Alliance Council approves the application. The Government is already screwing anyone self-employed. Working close to home will be a win-win for the applicant. Lower business costs and no business travel.
Why not, majority of civil servants and many NHS employees
have been shirking from home since the pandemic on
full pay.
Seems to becoming the norm lately, beats paying high rents and
rates.
Sounds good ,not noisy or smelly. Let the woman work.
Seems to be getting alot of press for a trivial matter.
Plenty of properties stinking of pot and people comming and going all dsy on the island and nothing done.
Why is this news?
Surely there’s more to report than someone putting a shed in the back garden.
Well done. I hope this venture goes well. We must encourage this type of cottage industry.
