Islanders are set for a rapid McDonald’s takeover as yet another site has been given the green light by County Hall in what feels like just a couple of months.
The Island has gone from only having to resist 2 chains which dub the infamous golden arches, to a total of 5 chains, proving Islanders really are loving it.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the plans will see Happy Meals all round as a new multi-million-pound ‘drive-thru’ McDonald’s restaurant moves a step closer to opening on the edge of a large Isle of Wight village.
County Hall has formally approved a planning application from the fast-food giant for an outlet next to Newport Road in Lake, including car parking, landscaping and associated works, and now residents could see a McFlurry of activity around the site.
The local authority’s planning committee voted for the proposal at a meeting last July, with economic benefits and Bay Area regeneration cited as grounds in favour.
A legal agreement has now been published on the council’s planning portal, including covenants for the developer and owner to pay County Hall a financial contribution relating to biodiversity.
McDonald’s agent, Planware, previously said the development will provide ‘over 120 jobs’ for the community and represents a multi-million-pound investment.
They cite other benefits including meeting customer demand and introducing extra choice in the market.
County Hall’s consent goes against a previous officer recommendation to refuse the facility after a committee report written last year said the application failed to meet policy requirements on health implications.
It also cited an adverse impact on neighbouring property, the development’s location outside of a designated town centre, insufficient archaeology information and lack of a legal agreement for environmental improvements.
The council’s consent includes 24 conditions for reasons including planning policy and legal compliance, environmental protection, the interests of highway safety, heritage preservation and residential amenity, and preventing annoyance and disturbance.

Great to see the island is encouraging obesity.
Only 1 Hospital, it’s a recipe for disaster and a benefit
disaster.
Too many numpy eateries, time for some healthy food
establishments.
such as
How would you make it happen, you cannot force people to eat vegetables and pulses, what you can do is educate and encourage and stop parents dumping their kids in massices for every meal.
Its shit food.
Top marks to the AI chatbot that wrote this article for incorporating so many McDonalds slogans and menu items
in to one article. However, a ‘chain’ isn’t an individual restaurant, it’s the entity itself i.e. McDonalds. Don’t know where they got 5 from. McDonalds must be expecting a spectacular increase in fast food demand from all the tourists to the Bay Area or as Enough is Enough has said already and spectacular increase in obesity and heart attacks, Was this approved by the new Reform councillors?
Apparently McDonalds has a toxic workplace culture. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c75ngl49695o
Who actually cares? Don’t eat there then, it’s personal choice?
we are all responsible for what we eat and anyways it’s most probably aimed at the tourists not the locals???
So true. Self control is everything.
i wont eat it , my choice but what i don’t have control over is the rubbish most customers feel is ok to drop, dump even throw out car windows. that’s what i am concerned about
Sadly the young are addicted to it, get them young and they can’t stop. So happy meals for all the kids and the future is good for the business, never mind the health implications which are dealt with by the NHS.
Also, why approve all these businesses “out of town” and then wonder why the town is going downhill.
one last gripe, 120 employees?
More fat fat fatties rubbish everywhere…..brilliant.
I hope the queueing isn’t up the road like it is in Ryde on a Friday evening blocking the traffic on the roundabout.
I’d rather go hungry than eat that shit.
