FUNDRAISING APPEAL LAUNCHED TO HELP YOUNG BELLRINGERS COMPETE NATIONALLY

A group of young Isle of Wight bellringers are appealing for sponsorship from local businesses and individuals as they prepare to represent the Island at a prestigious national competition this summer.

The Vectis Youth Bellringers will travel to Nottingham to take part in the Ringing World National Youth Competition on 4th July. The event brings together the very best young bellringers from across the UK, with teams judged on their ringing precision and teamwork.

The Isle of Wight team is made up of 6 young people aged between 10 and 15.

They are now seeking financial support to help cover the costs of transport to the mainland (including ferry, minibus and fuel), accommodation during the competition and branded team clothing so they can proudly represent the Island.

Lexi Skeldon-Downer, who runs the Vectis Youth team with her husband Kieran Downer, said the opportunity was an exciting one for the group.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for these enthusiastic and talented young people to represent the Isle of Wight at the highest level,

“They have worked incredibly hard, giving up evenings and weekends to practise, and entering this competition is a real achievement in itself. Any support we receive will make a huge difference and help ensure that everyone can take part.”

Bellringing is a centuries-old tradition that combines physical coordination, mental focus and teamwork. For young people, it offers the chance to develop confidence, discipline and communication skills, while also forming strong friendships.

Team member 13-year-old Alfie Luff from Brighstone said he was proud to be part of the group:

“Bellringing has given me confidence and skills I wouldn’t have gained anywhere else,

“We’re all really excited to be representing the Isle of Wight and to show what young ringers from the Island can do. It would mean a lot to us to have the support of the local community behind the team.”

As part of their fundraising efforts, the team has started a GoFundMe page and are also organising a fundraising raffle and would be very grateful for prize donations from local businesses or individuals.

All contributions will help support the young ringers on their journey to Nottingham and ensure they can represent the Isle of Wight with pride.
