Ventnor Winter Gardens has been slapped with an embarrassing 0 out of 5 hygiene rating following a recent inspection by the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team.
Inspectors visited the property overlooking Ventnor Esplanade on 21st October this year and found that major improvement was necessary in at least 2 core areas.
According to official data published this week, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building requires major improvement. This could include ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.
The management of food safety has also been flagged up as requiring major improvement, which includes things such as ensuring food is safe to eat and that staff know about food safety.
Improvement is necessary in hygienic food handling such as the preparation, cooking, and storage of food.
Ventnor Winter Gardens was previously given 1 out of 5 following an inspection in February 2020, just before the COVID pandemic hit. Prior to that the establishment was rating as generally satisfactory with a 3 out of 5 rating.

I really have a problem understanding this so-called food hygiene rating system.
I know a 5 is not easy to achieve, so many and detailed records needing to be kept due to allergies, but anything under a 3 should be regarded with great suspicion by the public, and why at a ZERO rating is a business not forced to close??
Just what do you have to do to get shut down?
To get shut down all you need to do is nothing, just let the food go off, don’t clean anything, never clean the ventilation, never prepare food properly, quite easy really, how the coffee shop at Tesco Ryde is still operating is beyond me, sit in there and look straight up, cobwebs, dirt, loose panels high up in the ceiling, that needs a looking at.
I too wonder why they are not shut down till things are improved.
Who is responsible if a food place only gets a 0 or 1 rating and is NOT closed down and someone ends up with food poisoning or even worse?
spot on, if given 0 rating then they should be forced to cease trading until they can sort themselves out and be re tested, anything less than that is putting customers health at risk.
After receiving a zero rating, perhaps someone paid the powers that be, under the table, not to close them down.
It is just not good enough that Environmental Health have not been on this.
To get so low as a 0 CLEARLY means they have not been doing their job.
They need to look at all the pub kitchens and snooker place kitchens all the small not so conspicuous places as well.
Why should the public be subjected to this disgusting lazy behavior of being charged for something that is dirty and potentially could make someone very very ill.
Environmental Health please do your job and get this sorted and checked regularly without warning and shut people down who are putting the public at risk until its clean, safe and checked.
Any establishment who are running a dirty business should be fined heavily and banned from trading
We are in a pandemic and businesses are still filthy
Better off putting lances burger wagon out side ,clean nice grub
Reading the comments, you would have thought that the challenges faced in hospitality and elsewhere by Covid never happened. OK it was not up to scratch, so, it’s being dealt with.
Why is it management only put in new controls after they have been checked?
The quality of management in eating establishments is poor to say the least
Zero rating that doesn’t surprise me, what does surprise me is the owners don’t care about it anymore why would they when they only paid £1 for it, shame on The Hambrough Group
With the assistance and support from IOW Council The Ventnor Winter Gardens have implemented a new Food Safety Management system along with the re-training of staff. Essential maintenance and re decoration of the Kitchen has been carried out and was
re-inspected 14 days after this report! We welcome a re-inspection and score in the New Year.
